Ponting: I can still dominate Test cricket

Ponting: I can still dominate Test cricket

Ricky Ponting has vowed to continue playing Test cricket for Australia but concedes his ODI career is over after he was axed from the CB Series squad.

Ponting stopped short of formally retiring from one-day cricket, but told a press conference he doesn't expect to play any more ODIs for Australia.

But the former Australia skipper still believes he has plenty to offer in the longest form of the game, and will also still be available for Tasmania.

Australia are next in Test action when they tour the West Indies in April.

Ponting said on Tuesday: "I will continue playing Test cricket and I'll continue playing for Tasmania as well.

"I think I've proved to myself and to everybody else that I'm still capable of dominating Test cricket as I did in the last series against India.

"I'm looking forward to getting back and playing the last couple of Shield games for Tasmania this year and then heading to the West Indies hopefully with some runs under my belt.

"John [Inverarity] made it very clear to me yesterday the direction that they're heading with the one-day team and that I'm not part of their plans.

"It's a little bit hard to come here today and say I'm retiring when I've already been left out of the side. I don't expect to play one-day international cricket for Australia any more and I'm pretty sure the selectors don't expect to pick me either."

Ponting played 375 one-day internationals for Australia, winning the World Cup on three occasions and captaining the side to two of those victories. He made 13,704 runs in one-day international cricket, second only to Sachin Tendulkar in the all-time list.

His most memorable innings was surely his unbeaten 140 in the World Cup final victory against India in South Africa in 2003.

However, he recorded five successive single-figure scores during the ongoing Commonwealth Bank Series against India and Sri Lanka, prompting the Australia selectors to leave him out of their squad for the remainder of the series. All-rounder Shane Watson returns in his place.

Ponting had enjoyed a stunning return to form during the 4-0 Test series whitewash against India, scoring 544 runs at a three-figure average with two centuries and three 50s and made it clear that he retains the hunger to succeed at the highest level.

"The passion for the international game of cricket for me has not died or changed one little bit," he said.

"I still don't see a finish line as far as my international career is concerned.

"Now that one-day cricket isn't there any more we all know that day is coming closer and closer for me.

"I don't think I'm the sort of person who is going to want to have a massive farewell series. I'll make a decision when I think that I can't contribute to winning games for Australia."

Ponting's determination to continue in Test cricket means he remains in contention for the 2013 Ashes series in England, and he didn't rule out a stint in county cricket to help prepare for that campaign.

Australia play no Test cricket between May and November this year, potentially leaving Ponting available for most of the county season.
