Sri Lanka have moved to second place in the CB Series table after bowling India out for 238 in the 46th over to secure a 51-run win at the Gabba.

Set 290 to win, India fell well short in their chase for the second time in three days, leaving Brisbane without a point and falling from first on the ladder to third.

A whirlwind 47-run cameo from Irfan Pathan kept India with a sniff until late in the game, but a 92-run fourth-wicket stand between Suresh Raina (32) and Virat Kohli (66) was their high point, after early wickets made for an uphill battle.

Earlier, 22-year-old Lahiru Thirimanne (62) and Angelo Mathews (49 not out) powered Sri Lanka to their imposing total, capitalising on the platform set by openers Mahela Jayawardene (45) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (51), who were rock solid in a 95-run opening stand.

Captain Jayawardene and predecessor Dilshan's partnership reached 50 in the eighth over as Sri Lanka started strongly having won the toss.

Both batsmen were within sight of half-centuries when Jayawardene pulled Pathan straight to short mid-wicket, where Virender Sehwag took a superb diving catch.

That was 95 for one and it became 104 for two when Dilshan, shortly after completing a 63-ball half-century, got a thin edge to keeper Parthiv Patel as he tried to cut Ravichandran Ashwin.

Kumar Sangakkara (eight) pulled the first ball of Umesh Yadav's second spell straight to Sachin Tendulkar at long leg, and the next hurried new man Thirimanne's defensive stroke.

Thirimanne and Chandimal steadied the ship well after those three quick setbacks and their 50 partnership came at almost a run a ball.

Pathan returned to bowl Chandimal for 38, ending an impressive stand of 71 between the young pair, and Thirimanne was then spared in an unusual incident.

Bowler Ashwin took the bails off with Thirimanne backing up out of his ground.

He would have been run out under the letter of the law, but it appeared stand-in captain Sehwag and senior pro Tendulkar agreed to withdraw the appeal.

Thirimanne completed a 53-ball half-century but appeared disturbed by the incident and Vinay Kumar then pulled out of a delivery as the young batsman wandered once more.

His eventual dismissal for a run-a-ball 62 was more orthodox, though, as he hoisted Ashwin into the off side where Raina judged the catch perfectly.

Raina was introduced for the 49th over and bowled Thisara Perera (10) with his first ball before having Mathews dropped by Patel.

The Indian response started dismally, Sehwag out for a second ball duck to Lasith Malinga. Tendulkar, still in pursuit of his long-awaited hundredth international hundred looked in good touch but again fell well short as he was second out, playing on Nuwan Kulasekara for 22.

The same bowler made it 54 for three when he drew a loose shot from Gautam Gambhir and later added a third scalp in the form of Ravindra Jadeja.

Kohli and Raina put on 92 to steady the scoreboard before the latter eventually fell for 32 to Farveez Maharoof.

Kohli continued compiling runs in unspectacular fashion, scoring just two boundaries in 83 balls but making 66 before becoming Perera's first victim.

Perera made light work of the lower order as he finished with four for 37, including the final wicket of Pathan, who made a plucky 47.
