Premier League Team of the Week 16

Strikers galore as Kelvin Leong takes you through our Premier League Team of the Week.

Craig Gordon - Sunderland

His time as a Black Cat has been one full of intense scrutiny but on Sunday night, he singlehandedly kept Manchester City attack at bay until his defenders lapse in concentration at the death allowed the Eastlanders to sneak in and earn themselves an undeserved draw.

Gareth Bale - Tottenham Hotspur

When he was a teenager at Southampton, many pundits touted this boy as the next Welsh wing wizard after Ryan Giggs but he failed to live up to the high expectations at Spurs until recently. In the last few games for Tottenham, Bale has been nothing short of spectacular down the left wing. There is hope for Welsh football after all!

Alex - Chelsea

The former PSV Eindhoven sweeper has always acted as a substitute for John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho but his last two outings have indeed proven that he is just as good if not better than the first-choice duo. A rock in defence while often providing an option on the offensive end with his lethal free-kicks. A World Cup spot with Brazil could be in the offing.

Richard Dunne - Aston Villa

When you are up against a team like Stoke who hoist the ball up higher in the air than the slamdunking basketball stars of the NBA do, you need a leader at the back who is willing to put his head into every possible situation to repel the attackers. Up step Dunne who showed no fear as he rallied the Villans to a tough point away at the Brittania stadium.

Craig Gardner - Birmingham

Alex McLeish's men were facing a 2-0 deficit at St Andrews against Everton before utility man Craig Gardner gave them a lifeline when he pulled it back to 2-1. The Toffees found their rhythm and confidence after Gardner's goal and they swamped forward in numbers to finally level the game and settle for a point.

Park Ji-Sung - Manchester United

Three-lung Park as they call him at Old Trafford. He didn't even start the match but once he came on in the second-half, Fulham defenders were left chasing shadows as he hurriedly got into the thick of things by floating in Beckham-like crosses with one finding Dimitar Berbatov who smashed it home.

Fabrice Muamba - Bolton

Owen Coyle's insistence on playing a passing game instead of the familiar long-ball tactics at Bolton have garnered mixed reactions from the fans but after a patchy start to his time as Bolton manager, Coyle seems to have found the right formula with midfield enforcer Muamba enjoying the responsibilities of shouldering his side's defensive duties from the middle of the park. The youngster even managed to get on the scoresheet.

Denilson - Arsenal

With Aaron Ramsey out for the season and Jack Wilshere on loan to Bolton, the experienced Brazilian has stepped up to be the unsung hero in an Arsenal line-up that often packs a load of firepower but lack the tenacity in defence that Denilson brings to the team. His powerdriver forced Boaz Myhill to palm the ball into Nicklas Bendtner's path to secure three points for the Gunners.

Nicklas Bendtner - Arsenal

He labeled himself as the best striker at Arsenal but has never quite delivered the goods. With Robin van Persie still a mile away from a comeback, Arsene Wenger's title hopes will now solely depend on the Danish marksman. He took his chance and went for the rebound to claim a late winner for the Gunners against Phil Brown's Hull side. Oh, Brown was booted out right after.

Didier Drogba - Chelsea

What a great way to warm up for a midweek do-or-die matchup against Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan side. The Ivorian hitman netted a brace against West Ham to get himself ready for the big showdown with his former beloved boss.

Wayne Rooney - Manchester United

32 goals in the bag and definitely more to come. If Rooney continues to find the back of the net at such breakneck speed, few would dare bet against him breaking all the goalscoring records at Manchester United and for England. And to think we doubted his ability to replace Cristiano Ronaldo. Sorry Wayne, we were wrong!
