Premier League Team of the Week 17
Carlos Tevez seals his place as the most hardworking footballer Kelvin Leong has ever seen!
Edwin van Der Sar - Manchester United
Not that the giant Dutchman had much to do during the game but when he was called upon on two separate occasions, Van Der Sar flew through the air like a swordfish to deny Bolton any chance of getting back into the game. Too old for the job? Not for the Dutchman. Like good wine, he gets better with age.
Yuri Zhirkov - Chelsea
With Ashley Cole still finding his way in life both on and off the pitch, the Russian deputy has stepped up to the plate and delivered a stern warning that he is ready to make the left-back spot his own. Won two penalties for Carlo Ancelotti's team in their 7-1 mauling of Aston Villa.
Nemanja Vidic - Manchester United
The past fortnight has been sort of a salvation for the Serbian defender. After his nightmarish game against Liverpool last season, Vidic has been unbreakable in the past two matches. To have stopped Fernando Torres and Kevin Davies in front of goal is enough for us to give him a spot in our Team of the Week.
Michael Dawson - Tottenham Hotspur
He captained his side to an important win over Portsmouth to keep Spurs' Champions League hopes alive. With Ledley King unable to play in consecutive games, Dawson has been clocking overtime in an attempt to add some stability to a sometimes fragile defence. Underrated but could spring a surpise when Fabio Capello names his final squad for the World Cup in South Africa.
Craig Gardner - Birmingham
Arsene Wenger uttered the F-word in his post-match press conference and it was down partly to Gardner's full-blooded challenge on one of the Frenchman's untouchables, Cesc Fabregas. When you play such a beautiful game of football, the only way a lesser team can stop you is to scrap and that is exactly what Gardner and his team-mates did. They punished Arsenal for not being clinical enough to kill the game off after Samir Nasri's opening goal.
Frank Lampard - Chelsea
England fans should really stop moaning at the fact that Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard cannot seem to play alongside each other. Who needs Stevie-G when Lampard is in such terrific form. Four goals in one game for a midfielder is a marvellous record. Give the man the credit he deserves. Long overdue I say.
Javier Mascherano - Liverpool
The red half of Merseyside must be downing their beers to celebrate Mascherano's willingness to stay at the club. On Sunday, Mascherano unleashed hell on the Black Cats with his bullish attitude down the middle, savaging the opposition and puncturing their already waning confidence.
David Dunn - Blackburn Rovers
One of the fiercest derbies in English football between Blackburn and Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday was settled by the sweet right foot of David Dunn. Once a nominee for David Beckham's England throne down the right wing, the stylish midfielder seems to have found his second wind in a long and arduous career.
Fernando Torres - Liverpool
Rafa Benitez must have been the first man to give El Nino a hug when he came off against Sunderland on Sunday. Torres' first goal was worthy of his stature as one of the world's best strikers and the fact that he had the audacity to try his luck from there is testament of the Spaniard's class.
Carlos Tevez - Manchester City
Sir Alex Ferguson must be living in denial when he allowed the Argentine Apache to leave Old Trafford. His industry and energiser-bunny style of play was the sole reason City came away with three points against a resolute Wigan defence.
Dimitar Berbatov - Manchester United
Lazy, unmotivated, unbothered and basically not good enough for to pull on a United shirt. That seems to be the usual criticism of the Bulgarian. Against Bolton on Saturday, Berbatov strolled into the Reebok stadium and put on a show for the travelling supporters to repay Ferguson's undaunted faith in him.
