Premier League Team of the Week 19

Premier League Team of the Week 19

No Fernando Torres, no Wayne Rooney. But all hail Carlos Tevez, the hero of Manchester City in our Team of the Week.

Mark Schwarzer - Fulham

Sometimes, I just can't help but feel Schwarzer is underestimated. The giant Aussie stopper has always been solid no matter which club he played for. On Sunday, he singlehandedly denied Liverpool three points with some fabulous saves. Simply magnificent. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie....

Phil Jones - Blackburn Rovers

This young boy has a bright future ahead of him. He was part of the defence that kept Chelsea at bay recently and he repeated his heroics in the game against Manchester United. Dimitar Berbatov and Federico Macheda were quiet throughout the 90 minutes and a huge chunk of it should be credited to Jones' tremendous showing.

Ryan Nelsen - Blackburn Rovers

The New Zealander has been out injured for awhile but had to make an abrupt entrance when Christopher Samba limped off with an injury. Contrary to what the pundits predicted, Nelsen showed no signs of rustiness as he marshalled the back four with consummate ease.

Jody Craddock - Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton are edging further away from the drop zone and a big part of it is down to the gutsy performances of Jody Craddock. The defensive stalwart soldiered on in his 500th league appearance despite a bloodied forehead and helped the Wolves secure a point against Stoke ‘Air Bombers' City.

Nedum Onuoha - Manchester City

Two goals from the young defender against Birmingham's watertight defence is a good example of what Onuoha can become if he continues to grow. Between him and Micah Richards, you can't help but think that one of them will be shipped out when the wealthy City owners splash the cash in the summer. Good time for Onuoha to stake his claim.

Rory Delap - Stoke City

Delap could very well be part of the 2012 London Olympics if he continues his speciality of bombarding opponents' boxes with his long throws. Against Wolverhampton, Delap sent throw after throw into the danger area but was let down by his team-mates' poor finishing.

Graham Alexander - Burnley

Alexander was one of three players to have scored a brace at the weekend and both goals came from the penalty-spot. He was brave enough to step up at the KC Stadium not once but twice within the span of four minutes to send the travelling fans home in ecstasy knowing that their relegation dogfight is still very much intact.

Maxi Rodriguez - Liverpool

Yet again, Rafa Benitez let the Liverpool supporters down when he decided to rest a few of his top stars but the one thing he was spot on this season is to have signed Rodriguez from Atletico Madrid. The Argentine midfielder is a tireless runner who puts in his fair share of work both in attack and defence. If only his team-mates were of the same class. Why was David N'gog on the pitch anyway?

Carlos Tevez - Manchester City

Tevez is one of the top five strikers in the Premier League. Along with Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba, Wayne Rooney and Jermain Defoe, the Argentine deserves his place high up the order. Blessed with great technique, Tevez has a lion's heart to go with it. He scored against Birmingham, albeit from the penalty-spot to keep City in the driving seat for the coveted fourth spot.

IIan - West Ham

The Brazilian striker has come good in recent matches for Gianfranco Zola. Having played second fiddle to the pairing of Mido and Carlton Cole since his January move from St Etienne but the Hammers' fans were chanting his name long into the night after IIan smashed in a winning goal to drive West Ham's relegation fears away.

Emmanuel Adebayor - Manchester City

Ade-goal has finally recovered from the African Cup of Nations nightmare where he was caught in the middle of a gunfire attack. Two goals against Birmingham signalled his intentions to finish the season on a high. But has he done enough to keep his starting berth when more stars arrive at the Eastlands?
