European Football Wednesday Round-up
A busy night of action across Europe saw defending champions Lille eliminated from the Coupe de France, while Celtic extended their lead in the Scottish Premier League.
Coupe de France
Defending champions Lille were knocked out of the Coupe de France at the last-16 stage as they went down 2-1 to Valenciennes on Wednesday night.
But fellow Ligue 1 high-flyers Montpellier eased through and Lyon saw off Bordeaux after extra time.
Two goals in eight second-half minutes saw Valenciennes past Les Dogues, who won the league and cup double last season.
Mathieu Dossevi met Dusan Djuric's free-kick at the near post to open the scoring in the 70th minute and Rudy Mater set up Vincent Aboubakar to lash home the second via the underside of the crossbar.
Nolan Roux headed home Gianni Bruno's cross with a minute remaining but it was too little, too late for Lille, though Franck Beria saw a stoppage-time lob cleared off the line by Rafael Schmitz.
Lyon had to come from behind after Jussie gave Bordeaux a 23rd-minute lead, Alexandre Lacazette following in to equalise after Cedric Carrasso saved Ederson's effort (36).
Lacazette twice went close to a second but extra time arrived - but Les Gones took the lead six minutes in when Bafetimbi Gomis finished from a narrow angle, and Jimmy Briand then rounded off a superb team move to make it 3-1 with two minutes remaining.
Olivier Giroud and Younes Belhanda fired Montpellier to a 2-0 win at Ligue 2 Chateauroux and Gazelec Ajaccio beat fellow minnows Jeanne d'Arc by the same scoreline thanks to Nicolas Verdier's penalty and a second goal from Mickael Colloredo.
Scottish Premier League
Celtic stretched their lead over Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premier League to four points with a 4-0 thrashing of Hearts at Tynecastle.
Seconds after Stephen Elliott's second-minute header appeared to cross the line before being blocked by Celtic midfielder Joe Ledley, Hoops skipper Scott Brown drove low past Jambos keeper Jamie MacDonald for the opener.
Midfielder Victor Wanyama and Ledley made it 3-0 at the interval before striker Gary Hooper concluded the romp on the hour mark with a typical poacher's goal from close range.
Greek Superleague
Doxa Dramas picked up only their second win since promotion to the Superleague as they triumphed 2-0 at Panetolikos on Wednesday night.
Christos Aravidis struck after 35 minutes and Vitor Lima clinched the points with 10 minutes remaining before the hosts' Andre Rocha was sent off late on.
There was also victory for Levadiakos, 1-0 at Asteras Tripoli. Marinaldo Da Silva scored the only goal in the 33rd minute, though Levadiakos then had 87th-minute substitute Stefano Napoleoni sent off in stoppage time.
