Italian Serie A Weekend Review

Review of this weekend's Serie A matches.

AC Milan's 1-0 win over Chievo - a result which allowed them to keep pace with city rivals Inter at the top of Serie A - was marred by an Achilles tendon injury to David Beckham.

The former England captain, who has won 115 caps, has been ruled out of the World Cup finals this summer with the injury, which came in the latter stages of tonight's win.

Substitute Clarence Seedorf scored a stoppage-time winner to lift AC Milan to victory over Chievo at the San Siro.

The Dutch midfielder entered the game with 11 minutes remaining and knocked in the only goal to pull the Rossoneri to within one point of leaders Inter Milan.

Third-placed Roma were held to a 3-3 draw by relegation-threatened Livorno, for whom Cristiano Lucarelli netted a hat-trick.

Simone Perrotta (2) and Luca Toni were on target for the Giallorossi, who squandered the lead on two occasions and also missed a penalty on an afternoon of frustration for coach Claudio Ranieri.

Antonio Floro Flores scored twice as Udinese ended fourth-placed Palermo's three-game winning streak with a 3-2 win which enhanced their own survival chances.

Flores netted after 44 and 65 minutes after Fabrizio Miccoli had briefly levelled for the Bianconeri at the Stadio Frulli.

Kwadwo Asamoah struck a third with 20 minutes remaining for Udinese and, despite conceding an acrobatic Edison effort 10 minutes from time, the hosts held on to add to their cushion against relegation.

Siena launched a stunning second-half fightback to recover from 3-0 down and earn a 3-3 draw as Juventus' disappointing campaign continued at Stadio Olimpico.

Three goals in the opening 10 minutes from Alessandro Del Piero (2) and Antonio Candreva looked to have secured the points for Alberto Zaccheroni's fifth-placed side, who had entered the match on the back of three wins from their last four games.

But Massimo Maccarone got a goal back for the basement battlers just before the interval before two goals from Abdel Ghezzal, the second from the spot, sealed the most unlikely of comebacks.

Sixth-placed Sampdoria were held to a 1-1 draw at Bologna as Daniele Gastaldello's 86th-minute strike was cancelled out in stoppage time by Andrea Raggi.

Elsewhere, Genoa edged a thriller with Cagliari 5-3, Bari won 2-0 at Lazio and Parma beat 10-man Atalanta 1-0.

On Saturday, Napoli were beaten 3-1 at home as Fiorentina recovered from their Champions League disappointment against Bayern Munich.

Ezequiel Lavezzi put Napoli on course for what looked like an easy win for the home side in the 47th minute, but shortly after they were denied a clear penalty, Fiorentina turned the game on its head.

Two goals from Alberto Gilardino and a third from Stevan Jovetic in stoppage time earned the Viola a win which lifts them to within a point of ninth-placed Genoa and back in the hunt for a place in Europe next season.

Napoli had not lost any of their last 42 home matches which have taken place under the floodlights at the Stadio San Paolo.

On Friday night, Catania threw the title race open and took a giant step towards securing their own future in the top flight by beating 10-man Inter Milan 3-1.

Diego Milito put the Nerazzurri in front in the 54th minute, but Catania refused to accept defeat and Maxi Lopez equalised 20 minutes later.

Sulley Muntari was sent off after only two minutes on the field as he gave away a penalty which was converted by Giuseppe Mascara in the 81st minute.

And Jorge Martinez sealed a deserved and important win for the Rosazzurri in the last minute as Inter showed weaknesses ahead of their trip to Chelsea in the Champions League next week.
