Deal secured for Swedish race

Deal secured for Swedish race

This weekend's Rally Sweden has secured a last-ditch deal to ensure the event will be available for international broadcast.

Rally organisers Svenska Rally AB on Tuesday confirmed a deal had been struck that allowed the Karlstad-based event to be filmed and distributed globally.

The move marks the first time in 20 years that TV rights have been handled by the promoters of an individual rally, following last week's breakdown in talks between motor sport's world governing body the FIA and broadcaster Eurosport.

"We are doing this for all our fans, to save the championship and its organisers and teams and not least for our own sake and our sponsors," Rally Sweden chief executive Glenn Olsson told a press conference in Karlstad.

Eurosport had been expected to film and distribute footage of the championship for the whole of 2012 after agreeing to broadcast last month's Monte Carlo Rally.

The broadcaster stepped in to handle coverage of the season-opener after former WRC promoter North One Sport was left unable to fulfil its duties following the collapse of its parent company, but was unable to agree a long-term deal with the FIA.
